A: The floor has two lounges, one used for studying and the other used
for social activities. The study lounge is a great asset to many
people because it is easier to do work there than in your own room.
The study lounge also has two computers that can be used for studying
purposes. The floor also has access to various things used for social
activities these include a projector for watching movies, and a
ping-pong table.

A: No, you do not have to be a science major you just need to have an
interest in science.

Q: How do I apply?
A: After you have been accepted to RIT, you will receive a form about
housing where you can apply to up three Special Interest Houses. You
will have to answer a few questions to apply.

A: Not enough

part of the house?
A: You can apply for off floor membership, you get access to all of
the floor and its materials, i.e. the lounges, projector usage.

A: Yes, each quarter there are two evaluation periods, where you are
evaluated on how many social events you have, your committee duties,
and attendance of floor meetings. There is also a quarterly community
service requirement and occasionally a fund raising requirement.

A: A social event is an event other than eating where 10 people do
something social. For each evaluation period, you need a social event
equal to the number of weeks in the evaluation period.

Q: What are the committees?
A: The committees are various groups on the floor that do things to
better the floor. It is part of the requirement that you are a member
of one of these committees.
Faculty Relations: Maintains relations with the College of Science.
Public Relations: Is responsible for the open houses and the public
image of the special interest house.
Tech: Maintains the computers in the study lounge and help people with
programming and what not. Also takes care of the website.
House Improvements: Informs FMS if there are things on floor that need
to be fixed, and purchases things the floor needs to be clean.
Fund Raising: Organizes fund raising activities.
Historical: Responsible for upkeep of the study lounges library.
Social: Keeps track of social events that have happened and plans new
social events.

Q: What’s the Open Door Policy?
A: The House of General Sciences asks that you, in general, keep an
friendly open social atmosphere on the floor. You don’t literally need
to have your door open 24/7 as people do need to do homework or want
some privacy sometimes. But it’s encouraged, within reason, for you
keep your door open at least some of the time so you can be social
with people and they can meet you.

A: We often organize tutoring and school help through the Faculty
Relations head and the College of Science. Plans to put together even
more comprehensive tutoring and mentoring programs are in the works
right now.
